Upcoming ECGT Directive set to reshape B Corp recertification

The EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive, due to apply from September 2026, is set to intensify regulatory enforcement around misleading environmental claims, such as greenwashing, and unverified sustainability labels. The Directive impacts any company that sells to, markets to, or engages with, consumers in the EU; impacting thousands of companies and reshaping how sustainability credentials are communicated. The Directive will not only raise the bar for sustainability claims, but will redefine consumer trust and what it means to be a credible and purpose-driven business in the EU.

For Certified B Corps affected by the ECGT Directive, the implications are prompt and far-reaching. B Lab has confirmed that B Corps must ensure compliance under the ECGT Directive before they can use the B Corp logo and communicate their status to EU consumers.

Following years of collaboration, B Lab has worked with policymakers to ensure certification under the new B Corp standards (V2.1), applicable from March 2026, achieves compliance with the ECGT Directive and meets the legal requirements it sets out as a valid sustainability label in the EU. V2.1’s new third-party verification system uses ISO 17021-1 accredited providers, meeting the ECGT Directive’s requirement for independent, third-party verification of sustainability labels.

As previous B Corp standards do not comply with the ECGT Directive, current B Corporations impacted by the ECGT Directive must therefore submit for recertification against the new B Corp standards by 15th July 2026, regardless of their current recertification date. This is to ensure that they can maintain their B Corp status and continue to use all B Corp logos and trademarks. In addition, doing so will avoid any potential financial penalties by ensuring compliance with the EGCT Directive in time for its enforcement in September, and obtain significant differentiation within an increasingly sceptical market.
