Danish Government cut fees for producer responsibility for packaging

There has been an extensive period of debating, negotiating, and demands for political intervention with Danish packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The decision to reduce recycling fees has now been made to make it easier and cheaper for Danish businesses.

Our partner scheme, Emballageretur, have actively contributed toward this decision, having its members at the forefront of their arguments. This change not only provides a short-term solution but a cost-effective, long-term safeguarding for producer responsibility.

Changes that have been approved:

  • Municipal fees (local government) have been significantly reduced
  • Municipalities must now follow a common standardised service level
  • The advanced payment to the municipalities is maintained in line with the intention of the Act
  • Packaging tax is abolished
  • The Danish Environmental Protection Agency and DPA's (Dansk Producentansvar the Danish EPR scheme) administration fees must be revised
  • The start of producer responsibility will be maintained until 1 October 2025
  • Efforts must be made towards free riders
  • A study will show how neighbouring countries make producer responsibility cheaper

These efforts show important steps have been taken to make producer responsibility more financially responsible, transparent, and fair for Danish companies.
